Wall-mounted TVs are sleek, space-saving, and perfect for creating a modern entertainment setup in your home. But if you’ve ever tried to do it yourself, you know it can be trickier than it looks. From finding the right wall studs to hiding messy wires, there’s a lot that can go wrong. At Screw It Handyman Services, we’ve mounted hundreds of televisions across Belleville, Kingston, Peterborough, Oshawa, Whitby, and Prince Edward County, and we know the do’s and don’ts of a perfect installation.
Here are 10 essential tips to wall-mount your TV like a pro:
1. Choose the Right Wall Mount
Not all mounts are created equal. Decide whether you want a fixed mount, a tilting mount, or a full-motion (articulating) mount that allows you to swivel your TV. Make sure the mount is VESA-compatible with your TV model and supports its weight.
Pro Tip 1: For larger TVs (65” and up), a full-motion mount provides better viewing angles, especially in open-concept spaces.
Pro Tip 2: In MOST homes and installations, we recommend a full motion articulating mount as it allows for easy access to the back / sides of your television and port access (HDMI, Toslink, etc.)
Pro Tip 3: It's not just about the weight capacity of the mount. Check the distance between and location of your studs. Some newer homes are at 24" centers, so that cheap 16" center wall mount you just purchased, isn't going to work.
Pro Tip 4: By the time you finish reading this blog post, you could have already called SCREW IT HANDYMAN and have your installation scheduled - and leave the worrying to professionals.
2. Find the Wall Studs – And Don’t Skip This Step
TV mounts must be secured into wall studs, not just drywall. Use a stud finder to locate the studs and mark their centers. Mounting into drywall alone can cause the TV to fall, damaging both your wall and your expensive screen. If you consider yourself a wall-mount professional, Snap Toggle Bolts can provide added secure wall mounting, and peace-of-mind!
3. Measure Twice, Drill Once
Figure out the perfect height for your TV. While some viewers may prefer a vertical position where the center of the screen is at eye level when seated we feel that is far too low. Use some masking tape to mark your proposed location - and check with your significant other to see if they are aligned with you 'vision'. Mark your holes before drilling to avoid costly mistakes.
4. Hide the Cables for a Clean Look
Dangling wires can ruin the sleek look of your mounted TV. Use an in-wall power kit, cable raceways, or ask a professional for in-wall wiring solutions to keep things neat and safe. We can provide you with some in-wall solutions for power (behind the television) and to also route your audio and video cables. We provide our accessories to you with NO MARK UP - you only pay, what we pay.
5. Check Power Outlet Location
Your TV needs power! Make sure there’s an outlet near your mounting spot, or have an electrician install one behind the TV. Or re-read #4 above and let us provide you with a safe, low-cost solution like a PowerBridge. Your beautiful new wall-mounted TV should be admired without the distraction of hideous dangling cables - ICK!
6. Consider the Wall Type
Mounting on drywall, concrete, or brick requires different tools and anchors. Using the wrong hardware can compromise safety. For brick or concrete walls, masonry anchors are essential. Are yours studs 16" apart or 24"? Are they wood? Metal? What hardware do you need to safely and securely mount your TV (and mount) to the wall? Do you need toggle bolts? Do you need some professional help?
7. Don’t Forget About Viewing Angles and Glare
Think about where your windows and lights are. Glare can ruin your viewing experience. Tilt mounts or full-motion mounts help minimize reflections from sunlight or overhead lights.
8. Double-Check the Weight Rating
Always ensure the mount can handle your TV’s weight. Going by screen size alone isn’t enough—check the mount’s weight capacity and compare it to your TV’s specs.
9. Secure Your TV Properly
After attaching the mount to the wall, make sure the TV is locked into place according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A loose bracket can lead to accidents. We only use mounts that have one or more locking points, hinges or clasps.
10. Call a Professional for Peace of Mind
DIY is great, but mounting a TV can involve heavy lifting, drilling, and wiring—all of which can cause damage if done incorrectly. At Screw It Handyman Services, we offer professional TV mounting in the Durham Region, Belleville, Kingston, Peterborough, and Prince Edward County, ensuring your setup is safe, secure, and stylish.
